Nooitgedacht’s water gets a fresh flow

A R5,8 million water pipe replacement project is currently under way in Nooitgedacht, with approximately 1,45 kilometres of ageing infrastructure being upgraded along Baracuda Crescent, Salm, Pike and Tuna Roads. Now two months into construction, the work is already making strides toward improving water supply reliability for residents who have experienced frequent pipe bursts.
This initiative is part of the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive pipe replacement programme that takes place in various areas across Cape Town. In Nooitgedacht, the high frequency of pipe bursts and leaking valves warranted urgent intervention.
Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien, and Ward 31 Councillor, Alderman Theresa Thompson, visited the site to inspect progress ahead of the expected completion date in July 2025.
‘This Nooitgedacht project is progressing well and is one of many happening simultaneously across the city. In the current 2024/25 financial year alone, the City has invested R523 million in its water and sewer pipe replacement programme. Infrastructure upgrades are fundamental to reducing water supply disruptions, caused primarily by pipe bursts. By attending to pipe replacements proactively, the City is better able to ensure a secure, reliable water supply for all residents,’ said Councillor Badroodien.
As part of the City’s commitment to modernising infrastructure with minimal public disruption, the project makes use of trenchless pipe-cracking technology. This advanced method allows for the replacement of pipes with minimal disturbance to pavements and existing structures. The new 110 mm High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are not only cost-effective, but also boast a longer lifespan and full compliance with SABS standards.
‘Another significant benefit is that these projects also create jobs. Through this project in Nooitgedacht alone, 11 local residents were employed, gaining valuable work experience and skills as part of the contractor’s labour workforce,’ said Councillor Badroodien.
